  1. I was told I'll lose my house in a bankruptcy.  NOT true.  In fact bankruptcy is most often used to protect your assets, like your house.
  2. I was told bankruptcy will ruin my credit.  In most cases, the opposite is true; bankruptcy actually improves your credit by decreasing your debt to income ratio, eliminating debt and allowing you to rebuild your credit.
  3. Is Bankruptcy expensive?  In almost all cases bankruptcy will eliminate your debt for a tiny fraction of what you owe your creditors. In many cases, such as chapter 13, all you pay out of pocket is your filing fees and costs (usually around $350).
  4. I heard bankruptcy will stay on my record for 7 years.   Your credit report will show many credit related items, including late payments, missed payments, charge offs, lawsuits and judgments, which will stay on your report until they're addressed or paid, as long as 20 years or more. Bankruptcy actually allows you to immediately start rebuilding your credit by eliminating these negative reports on your credit through bankruptcy, and allowing you to start fresh.  Our clients have qualified for mortgages in as little as one year after filing. 
  5.
